当我们看到Part 2人物类的话题时，免不了要去说一个人的外貌。但往往100个考生里会有80个人告诉我，描述一个人的长相是一件多么难的事。

到底难在哪里？

我觉得主要原因在于很多学生觉得自己的词汇量支撑不起自己的描述。同时觉得在描述一个人的外貌时，往往没有侧重点，很散。

就像我当年学习雅思口语时，我的老师是这么教我的：

I want to talk about my friend, who has long straight hair and a pair of big eyes.

真的，当年我去描述一个人的外貌时，就是如此老土的一句话，没有任何夺人眼球的表达，但是那时候我的老师告诉我，这样就可以了。

可当我自己也成为一名雅思口语老师时，我已不能满足我的学生继续给我这样的回答，感觉太过于宽泛。

毕竟雅思还是一个academic exam，我们需要有更多critical thinking在里面。

所以你阐述的每一个点都一定要带上自己的思考。

那么对于一个人的外貌究竟该怎么来描述呢？

首先你要知道“外貌”包括了features (五官)，hair style (发型)，expression (神情)，build (体型)，gesture (姿态)等。

所以当我们对一个人外貌进行描述时，一定是为了想要加深听者对人物的印象。

既然如此，我们就一定要抓住人物最有特色的特征，然后展开描述。切记不要不能眉毛胡子一把抓。

就像鲁迅，他非常善于细致地精确地描绘人物外貌最富特征的部分，而舍弃与表现人物性格和精神面貌无关的其它东西。

他在《祝福》中14次写到样林嫂的眼睛，而一次眼神的变化，都透露出人物当时的心理和性格的变化。

而在写闰土时，他写眼睛的同时也写到闰土的手：“那手也不是我所记得的红活圆实的手，却又粗又笨而且开裂，像是松树皮了。” 以此来反映闰土生活的艰辛和痛苦。

写孔乙己时，他完全没有写他的眼睛, 而是写他那件“又旧又破的长衫”。

通过鲁迅，我们也可以感受到，写肖像的高要求是刻画、显示灵魂。

其实以前我也总觉得会不会外国的语言不会像中文来的更加得活灵活现，直到最近我看了一本叫做《Tuesdays With Morries》的书之后，不得不拜倒在作者生动的笔触之下。

这本书也是非常值得我们每个人去阅读的人生书籍，作者也是Morries老师的学生。在老师患上ASL (渐冻人症)后，他开始每周二和Morries老师上一次人生哲理课。

在书的前几页，作者也花了大量的笔触去介绍Morries老师的外貌。

不得不说当我读到那一页的时候，我真的惊叹，必须要把它背下来！因为他用到的每个单词都让我开始在脑中勾勒Morries老师的形象。

He is a small man who takes small steps, as if a strong wind could, at any time, whisk him up into the clouds.

他个子不高，迈着小碎步，好像随时来一阵大风，就能把他刮到空中。

注：whisk 这个单词本身就有名词和动词的用法。做名词时，表示“搅拌器”不过是手动的。作动词时，则表示快速搅打(鸡蛋，奶油等)。而这里的词组“whisk up”则表示“迅速上去”，为此后半句“whisk sb up into the clouds”很值得我们学习

In his graduation day robe, he looks like a cross between a biblical ([‘bɪblɪk(ə)l] 圣经的) prophet ([‘prɒfɪt] 先知, 预言者) and a Christmas elf (精灵).

毕业典礼上，他穿着礼服，有点像圣经里的先知，又有点像圣诞节的精灵。

He has sparkling (闪闪发光的) blue-green eyes, thinning sliver hair that spills onto his forehead (前额), big ears, a triangular nose, and tufts (两撮) of graying eyebrows.

他眼睛是蓝绿色的，非常明亮。稀疏的银发散落在额前，耳朵很大，鼻形挺阔，两道眉毛已成灰白色。

注：spill作为动词表示“溢出”，“流出”。为此spill onto可以等同于flood into 涌入。比如：1 million people spilled onto the streets of London. (近百万人涌上伦敦街头)

Although his teeth are crooked (弯曲的，歪的) and his lower ones are slanted (斜的) back—as if someone had once punched them in—when he smiles, it is as if you’d just told him the first joke on the earth.

牙齿长得参差不齐，下牙向里长，就像是有人把它们打进去过一样，可他笑起来时，就像你把世上最好笑的笑话刚刚告诉他一样。

注：first joke one the earth来表示最好笑的笑话，这和“Last“形成一个对比。比如我们说：“You are the last person that I will fall in love” 那么翻译过来就是“我死都不会喜欢你”。

When he hugs me, I feel his thin arms around my back. I am taller than he is, and when he holds me, I feel awkward, older, as if I were the parent and he were the child.

他随后拥抱了我。我都能感到他的小胳膊绕在我身后。我比他个子高，他抱我时，感觉有点难堪。因为感觉我比他大，就像我是父亲，而他是孩子一样。

所以你们有跟我一样被惊到么？

说实话，他其实讲到的外貌点真的很少。主要突出2个点：

当然，会有同学说，这样的描述太难了，并不能达到这个水平。

那么对于我们该做到怎样呢？

只要求抓一个外貌特征，但必须带上这个特征给你留下了怎样的印象。

来讲几个外貌特征，这也是我在课上跟学生必说的，比如：

1.Dimple 酒窝

一个人脸上有酒窝，会给你带来怎样的感觉？sweet还是 approachable (平易近人的)？

接着我就会这么来说：

I have a friend who has a couple of deep dimples. Every time I see her smiles, my world smells of (有…的味道) sweetness.

2. Freckle 雀斑

雀斑应该是比较具有争议性的一个外貌特征，比如有人会觉得这是种外貌瑕疵，但又有人觉得这让一个人变得很可爱，很性感。

那么我们就可以这么来：

My friend has a freckle face which brings her a sense of inferiority (自卑感) since her childhood; While in my mind, those freckles make her quite adorable and sexy.

3. Big eyes 大眼睛

大大的眼睛会不会给你一种很天真无邪的感觉？不是还有这么一句话么“大大的眼睛会说话”，你不觉得这样的一双眼睛可以让你读懂很多东西么？

I am quite envious of my sister’s big eyes which make her innocent and adorable. Every time I stare at her, there is a celestial sea (星辰大海) in her eyes.

4. Strong and tall 高又壮

这个点是一个班课的学生提出来的，我觉得非常棒。当她提到她爸爸时，就说她的爸爸又高又壮，给家人带来了安全感。

My father is strong and tall, so his build also brings our family a sense of safety.

5. dark skin (天生)皮肤黑

都说一白遮三丑，白的人会被大家所羡慕，那黑的呢？有人认为这是健康的肤色，而有些也可能会被大家取绰号叫“黑炭”。

I want to talk about my friend who was teased (嘲笑) a lot for his dark skin. People even called her Blackie, Ugly, or other horrible things. In spite of that, she is still strong-minded to be excellent.

6. funky hair 时髦的头发

感觉今年开始顶着一头绿毛，粉毛的人真心多。所以元芳，你怎么看？说实话，我看多了觉得好像有点好看的。至少春意盎然的感觉。

My friend is a visual artist (视觉艺术家) who is quite enchanted with (很喜欢) blues, purples and pinks, so she even dyed (染发) hair in her obsessed color every month. All such kind of funky hair is not really acceptable for me, but it does make her different, much lighter and more vibrant (充满生气的) than before.

7. bushy eyebrows 浓眉毛

你有见过那种眉毛特别浓的么？会不会让你想到蜡笔小新？或者眉毛再浓密点变成一眉道人？

My father has bushy eyebrows, just a few hairs away from becoming a unibrow (一字眉). My friends told me that the moment they saw my father, he reminded them of Crayon Shin-chan (蜡笔小新), a rude young boy in Japanese manga (日本动漫) who likes girls, trouble and shaking his bare bottom (光屁股扭来扭去).

当然我们在外貌上能去找的点还有很多，无论怎样，我们要的就是每个点都能给人留下深刻的印象，不然就是没有意义的。你说呢？
